Peer Mediation is a
process where trained student mediators help other students who are involved in an
argument or conflict.
The student mediators help
them resolve their conflict or differences in a way that
benefits both of the students having the conflict. The
student mediators
guide the
students to come to their
OWN
solutions and agreements. The mediators are also asked to
help make sure that all students are being included during
lunch and recess.
Mediating officers are
chosen by peer voting, teacher input and the approval of the
mediation coordinators (Ms. Daunhauer and Mrs. Peerenboom). Those officers
participate in training and re-training sessions to help them understand all aspects of
conflict management and resolution as well as demonstrating good communication and
listening skills.
At St. Joseph School, the program is available to all
students in grades 3-8 by making a request to one of the
coordinators. Mediating officers from grades 4, 5 & 6 are available to facilitate most mediations. Officers from grades 7 and 8 are
also available to mediate at the request of the coordinators.
