DRESS CODE POLICY (taken directly from Family Handbook) It is the policy of St. Joseph Catholic School that all students K-8 wear uniforms. Uniforms allow students to focus their attention on the educational and spiritual aspects of school by lessening the competition in clothing style, the distraction of inappropriate clothes in the classroom, and the concern for safety. The development of habits of neat appearance and good grooming are goals which should be part of the education of every student. Proper dress has a direct bearing on discipline and creation of a desirable atmosphere for learning. The school uniform fosters pride in being a St. Joseph Catholic School student and expresses mutual respect among students, respectful attitudes toward teachers, values of self-esteem, and awareness of God’s presence. The intent of the uniform dress code is to encourage appropriate attire which emphasizes the academic environment and Christian values. Students in Kindergarten through 8th grade are expected to follow the dress code. Neatness in dress and grooming reflects pride and sets a tone of serious commitment to a learning environment. Parents/guardians are encouraged to help enforce this dress code. The uniforms may be purchased through Schoolbelles, Andersons, J.C. Penney, Meijer, and at K-Mart. Information is available through the school office. All accessories (shoes, socks, belts) may be purchased on your own.
Shorts: Shorts may be worn all year. Skirts/Skorts: A skirt or skort shorter than the tips of the fingers when standing straight with arms at your sides would be too short. Shirt: Shirts with tails or slits should be tucked in and buttoned at all times. Sweatshirts and T-Shirts: Sweatshirts and t-shirts with St. Joseph logo are permitted on Fridays only. These should not be signed shirts. Shoes: Shoes must be in good condition and tied at all times. Dress shoes are recommended for Mass days. Socks/Hosiery: Socks/hosiery must be worn at all times. Hats: Hats may not be worn in the school building except on special occasions. Hair: Boys must be clean-shaven and their hair should be well groomed, clean and above the eyes and collar. The hair may be no longer than to just cover the top of the ear. Boys may not have pony tails. No fad haircuts or hair coloring are permitted. Sideburns may not go below bottom of the earlobe. Pants: Pants must be pulled up to waist level and a belt should be worn. Make-up: Minimal make-up is permitted in middle school. Nail Polish: Nail polish must be clear or pale. Earrings: Pierced ears are permitted with posts or closed hoops only. Earrings for boys are not permitted. On Fridays before weekend games, students who participate in athletics may wear school jerseys during their season. Students will be allowed to wear jeans or jean shorts with an appropriate t-shirt on the Friday following their birthday. Mission jeans days will be celebrated on Fridays. Coats and jackets may not be worn during the school day. Uniforms for scouting are exempt from the uniform code on appropriate meeting days. Students who disregard the dress code will be removed from the classroom. The principal will notify the parents/guardians. The student will sit in the office until the appropriate uniform is brought to school. The Principal will determine necessary dress for out of school functions or special occasions. The Principal shall have the authority to make the immediate decisions as to what is and is not acceptable in the way of dress and grooming. There may be occasions when the students are not required to wear uniforms, such as field trips and/or class trips.
