Mrs. Nicholson's Biography

Mrs. Joan Nicholson was born in Toledo, where she attended Gesu and Christ the King Schools.  She graduated from St. Ursula Academy, where she was involved with student council, FTA, sports intramurals, and the yearbook, The Scroll.  While attending high school and college she worked at the Lion Store, Sears at Westgate and Rink’s Bargain City.  Joan graduated from Mary Manse College with a Bachelor of Arts in Education.  She was taken various graduate level courses at BGSU, UT, Lourdes, and Ashland College.

Mrs. Nicholson married Tom Nicholson in 1967 and they have two grown children, Ellie Snyder and Mike Nicholson.  Their three grandchildren, Brent, Andrew, and Paige, keep them very busy with football, basketball, baseball, and soccer games, not forgetting those dance recitals.

Joan started her professional career teaching 5th grade at Christ the King School and continued teaching there for six years.  She then took time off to raise her children and returned back to teaching when they were of school age.  In 1981, she was hired to teach 6th grade at St. Joseph School in Maumee.  After three years, an opening in the 5th grade occurred and she returned to that grade level.  The rest is history!

In 1998, the Maumee Chamber of Commerce awarded Joan with the Outstanding Educators Award for her service to the students.  She has been an active member of the Maumee SAIL Board for the past eleven years, where she has served as President.  Joan is the active liaison for the LPDC (Local Professional Development Committee) where she assists in approving local teacher CEU’s.  Other activities she has been involved with include Girl Scouts, coaching softball, and various school committees over the years.  She spent 10 consecutive summer tutoring Math (which she has returned from to enjoy golfing).

Joan has spent a total if 31 years teaching the minds of young children.  It has always been her dream to be in a classroom and help children succeed.  She has been quoted as saying, “I love Maumee, I love St. Joe’s, I love the kids and that’s what it is all about.”  The only other place she can imagine herself is somewhere on a golf course!
