Mr. Rettig's Biography

Mr. Gary Rettig grew up in Holgate, Ohio, where he attended Holgate High School.  In high school, he was president of his senior class, in band and chorus, and played basketball.  He graduated from Defiance College in 1968 with a Bachelor of Science degree majoring in Business Administration and with a minor in Economics.  He received a Master’s degree in School Administration from Indiana University in 1979.  Mr. Rettig also took classes at Bowling Green State University and The University of Toledo.  He also holds a permanent teaching certificate. 

Mr. Rettig began teaching in 1968 in Central Local School District and retired in 1998.  While there, he taught 7^th grade Science, 8^th grade Ohio History, and 7^th and 8^th grade Physical Education.  Later he taught high school Accounting, General Business, and Driver’s Education.  Mr. Rettig was the middle school principal from 1992 – 1998.  He also coached basketball, football, baseball, and track. 

From 1998 – 2003, Mr. Rettig sold insurance for Allstate.  In 2003, he became principal at St. John Catholic School in Defiance, Ohio before becoming principal at St. Joseph Catholic School in Maumee, Ohio.  What Mr. Rettig likes most about school are the “kids.” 

While growing up, Mr. Rettig worked on a farm, worked for his father at a car dealership, worked in factories, and painted.  If Mr. Rettig were not a principal, he would like to be a coach or scout for a major university basketball team.  

Family is extremely important to Mr. Rettig as he has been married for almost 39 years.  He and his wife, Barb, have two daughters, a son-in-law, and three grandchildren.
